It is spooky to be back in the house where I grew up. I love traditional Japanese houses: their symmetry, openness, the way they bring in the outdoors.

My Suehiro grandfather sent to Tokyo for dolls for my Boy’s Day celebration. New dolls were added to collection each year and displayed for all to see.
I don’t know if boys still do this today. There is also a day for girls, called, you guessed it, Girl’s Day!

A close up view of my Boy’s Day loot. I still have the soldier in fancy red armor at the top. He is about three feet tall, has a golden headress and shoes, and lives in his own black, wooden box (he is leaning on it in the picture).
