Choosing Powerful Examples of Cultural Transmission

Now that you have identified examples of cultural transmission, your job is to narrow your data. As a group, identify the two visual examples that most clearly and powerfully illustrate cultural transmission. Everyone in your group should complete the information (below) for the two examples of cultural transmission that were chosen. Note that questions 1–5 of this information can be transferred directly from Handout 03-A. You will each take this information with you to your new group.

The category of cultural transmission that your group researched is:

Example 1:

 1. What is the title of the picture and what is the date, if known?

 2. Describe what is being transmitted from one group to another.

 3. Whose cultures or countries are represented?

 4. Who is absorbing or learning this new aspect of culture and from whom?

 5. What is the occasion for this cultural transmission?

 6. Why did your group choose this example?

 7. As a group, construct a two-sentence statement that conveys what you think this example of cultural transmission shows about the relationship between Japanese and non-Japanese in Yokohama.

 8. As a group, write one sentence that conveys why this example of cultural transmission is useful or important in understanding Japan at this time.
