Ito Chuta (1867–1954), a well-known Tokyo architect, designed this temple to replace one destroyed by
the earthquake. A student of Indian architecture, Ito found inspiration for the temple in a medieval style that
reflected Buddhism's roots in India. Completed in 1934, the temple became a popular tourist attraction.
