Between 1876 and 1879, the most lethal drought-famine in imperial China’s long history of famines and disasters struck the five northern provinces of Shanxi, Henan, Shandong, Zhili, and Shaanxi. This unit reproduces famine illustrations from
pamphlets that were produced by Chinese philanthropists
eager to solicit donations from wealthy gentry and merchants. One of
these pamphlets was subsequently translated and distributed by Christian missionaries as part of a worldwide campaign for famine relief in China.
