I took this picture with my Olympus camera.
We took field trips to the mountains and cities near Hiratsuka. I liked to be out with my friends and started to take pictures with my Olympus camera wherever we went.
Outing on mountain with my class–approximately 50 of us.

5th grade, 1961. Our annual class field trip that year was to the city of Yokohama.
Yokohama is the largest port in Japan. It is about 25 miles from Hiratsuka in the same prefecture. On our field trip we visited the pier and boats.

The annual school trip is a big thing. These days students even go to other countries. Hawaii is popular. The trip is to promote a sense of being part of a group.

School outing to a restaurant/tea shop, late spring. We all carry water bottles. Front row, last on left (1/2cut off), Sotaro Kobayashi Front row, 2nd from left, Shigeru, next to him.
The tea shop served traditional Japanese green tea and sweets. We sat on the floor traditional style, on individual straw mats, tatami. Most of us ate ice cream.

I discovered they knew her shoe size at Uncle Hiroshi’s shoe store! The shoe store has served the area near the Wharf for many years and they know the customers well. We hiked, carrying water containers, wearing partial school uniforms.
