Haruyo and I, dressed for school
I wore this suit for nyugakushiki – the ceremony of entering school. Uniforms were not required until Junior High.

Dress codes are very strict. The handkerchief says my name. Haruyo is in nursery school. Our bags hold a change of shoes – sneakers – for indoors.

Nursery school

I found the metal lunch box I took to nursery school! Usually my mom filled it with rice, cooked vegetables or meat, and sometimes eggs scrambled with soy sauce and sugar (tamago yaki).

(see picture of my lunch box in Site 06 of the Field Notes)

My favorite 4th grade class: art.

Everyone drew Noriko Ihara, the girl in front. I remember her name because it is written on one of the drawings! My best friend, Sotaro Kobayashi, and I took special art lessons every Saturday. He became a commercial artist.
