Leftwing protest in the 1920s and 1930s was commonly led by intellectuals versed in Marxist, socialist, and communist theory and practice—much of which was readily accessible through translations and commentaries in the print media. A variety of “proletarian” newspapers, magazines, and booklets disseminated these views to the working class. The last graphic here, dated 1933, announces a major symposium commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of Karl Marx—and is accompanied (on the right-hand side) by advertisements for a range of leftwing books and pamphlets.
