This Visualizing Cultures unit is based on illustrated Japanese texts published in 1849. It introduces the fascinating story of what the Japanese knew about Western power and aggression and the first Opium War in China (1839 to 1842) before Commodore Perry forced Japan to abandon its policy of seclusion in the early 1850s.
