Title: “A Second Victory at Jilong”
Year: 1884 Volume: 11 Page Number: 21

Caption Translation: Newspapers report that a telegram arrived on the sixteenth day of the seventh month from Xiamen, stating that two French warships moored in Jilong attacked the Chinese army stationed in the hills. Investigation revealed that one of the French warships was the ironclad Bayard, while the other one was a small warship. As the French knew that the battery built by the Chinese army on the hill behind the Customs house had targeted their ships, they especially fired cannons to bombard it, in the hope of silencing it. That night, some ships came to Shanghai from Taiwan. They reported that in the tenth and eleventh days of this month [August] the French again provoked battles in Jilong, with three warships in total. Struck by eleven Chinese cannons, each of the three French warships suffered damage and retreated from the port. In the attack eleven French soldiers died, while we had only one casualty. This was indeed a victory. From this it can be seen that the French are so covetous, crafty, and cruel that they nearly lack any human qualities. As Mencius put, “Benevolence will triumph over non-benevolence, just as water puts out fire.” The French are so ruthless that they will be definitely be wiped out.
