An 1891 book titled “The Cause of the Riots in the Yangtse Valley: A Complete Picture Gallery” by missionary Griffith John reproduced an illustrated pamphlet by Zhou Han, whose Chinese-language title translates as “In Accord with the Imperial Edict: Complete Illustrations of the Heretical Religion.” The images in Zhou’s book were used to stir up anti-Christian activity. Although the harsh imagery targeted Christianity, much of it reflected older traditions of domestic protest. The Chinese graphics, coupled with Griffith John’s extensive commentary, open a window on the growing conflict between Western views of China and Chinese views of the Western presence.
