An 1891 book titled The Cause of the Riots in the Yangtse Valley: A “Complete Picture Gallery” by missionary Griffith John reproduced an illustrated pamphlet by Chinese author Zhou Han. The images in Zhou’s pamphlet—titled In Accord with the Imperial Edict: Complete Illustrations of the Heretical Religion—were used to stir up anti-Christian activities. Griffith John reproduced the pamphlet in reverse order (32-1) of its original publication, and added translations and commentary. The Chinese graphics and transcribed caption pages, as well as a transcription of John’s introduction, appear elsewhere in this unit. Here, Griffith John’s entire book appears in 2-page spreads (click to enlarge pages). |
