This close-up of the harbor at Yokohama reveals how busy this treaty port became after Japan opened its doors to foreign trade. The vessels include both sailing ships and coal-fueled, steam-driven paddlewheel ships.
(The latter can be identified by their smokestacks and paddlewheels. Most steamers hoisted sail as well.)
